The current work description focuses on more intelligent and faster (higher speed) optical transmission systems in terms of the so-called coherent systems which are currently under extensive international R&D and are expected to become commercially available at 40-100 Gbit/s within the next 3-5 years and to make commercial transmission implementations possible at least up to 1 Tbit/s.
Such systems are under consideration and development by Swedish ICT industry represented in this application by Syntune (SME developing advanced tunable lasers), Skanova/TeliaSonera (network operator operating advanced optical core and metro networks in Sweden and abroad) and Transmode (SME developing advanced optical transmission systems and complete network implementations).
The project leverages on and further develops Acreo's leading competence in the optical transport network area, gained in EU FP6-7 and CELTIC projects (among others MUSE, NOBEL, MUPBED, NOBEL2, HECTO, MANGO, 100GET, ALPHA), through the VINNOVA supported projects
- “Broadband Communication Project” (from Y2002 through Y2006),
- the VINNOVA telecom program on “40-160 Gbit/s transmission” (from Y2002 through Y2004),
- the MMB project “Field demonstrations of broadband and mobility optical network solutions for the Future Internet” active from Y2007 through Y2010 and
- the “SICT Center IBBC” (active from Y2007 through Y2009).
The project will generate results that are on the international state-of-the art level for ICT research and will leverage on university collaboration with KTH/FMI where the project leader is Adjunct Professor in Optical Communication Systems. Part of the joint research work - which will support activities in this project - will be within the government supported strategic research area “IT och mobil kommunikation” (KTH application: ICT – The Next Generation).
As such the project will create a substantial Swedish base for future competitive ICT products based upon earlier successes by the participating companies in the physical layer product design. The project is also important in transferring competencies from Acreo to Swedish industry part-ners. Industry has committed in-kind financing of 5 MSEK in total for the R&D activities speci-fied in this project.Consortium
